What is Gestalt therapy?
Gestalt therapy pays attention to what is happening foryou now, in the session, rather than mainly working back through your history. You and your therapist notice what comes up as you talk: the thoughts, the feelings, and what your body is doing while you speak. That awareness is what creates room to choose differently. All four psychotherapists at New Tide are trained in Gestalt. Sessions are $80 for 55 minutes, online, anywhere in Australia.
What a session is actually like:
A first session is a conversation, not an assessment. Your therapist will ask what brought you here and what you would like to be different, then follow whatever seems most alive as you talk. You might be asked what you notice in your body, or to stay with a feeling slightly longer than is comfortable. Nothing is forced and you set the pace. Sessions run 55 minutes over video. You can book a free 15-minute chat with any of our therapists first, to see whether they are the right fit before you pay for anything. Most clients start weekly and review after several sessions.
Working with the body: somatic therapy
Somatic work means paying attention to what your body isdoing while you talk, not only what you are thinking. A tight chest, a held breath, a jaw that clenches when a particular name comes up. These are treated as useful information rather than symptoms to be removed.
Freya Dwyer and Alex Miteff both work this way. It is often helpful for anxiety, grief and trauma, where the feeling tends to arrive in the body before there are words for it.
