Get to Know Your Therapist: Meet Alex Miteff

Choosing a therapist is a deeply personal decision, and it often helps to get a sense of who they are before you ever book that first session. In this post, we sat down with Alex Miteff, a Gestalt psychotherapist, to learn more about his path into this work and how he supports clients.

What drew you to becoming a therapist, and what do you find most rewarding about the work?

What called me to become a therapist was experiencing a profound personal transformation through therapy myself. Having someone see beyond the limits of my own thinking opened the door to greater awareness, emotional intelligence, and wisdom. What I find most rewarding about my work is witnessing people connect with their vulnerability, process difficult emotions, and experience a greater sense of calm, peace, and clarity in their lives.

What's your therapeutic approach or style, and what types of concerns or clients do you enjoy working with most?

I work within the Gestalt framework, a present-focused, somatic-based therapy that supports clients in building awareness of their thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations. I see the body as an important gateway to deeper awareness, with physical sensations often serving as entry points into unconscious and emotional experience. I take a gentle, slow, and collaborative approach that allows clients to feel safe enough to connect with what's arising in the present moment.

While I enjoy working with clients from all walks of life, I have particular interests in supporting people navigating relationship challenges, addiction, low self-worth, and social isolation.

What's one thing you wish more people knew before starting therapy with you?

I believe every person has the capacity to overcome any obstacle they face in life. Often, the very obstacles that bring us to therapy become the catalysts for greater meaning, fulfillment, connection, and peace. My role is not to "fix" people, rather, I'm here to create the environment for clients to access their own inner resources and wisdom to heal and grow.

Outside of work, what do you do to unwind or recharge — and how does that show up in how you support your clients?

I commit to a morning sadhana every day - a spiritual practice involving yoga and meditation. I also make sure to prioritise family time above all other commitments, along with getting my dose of nature whenever I can. Family time, yoga, meditation, and nature all help me maintain a grounded nervous system so I can be more fully present for my clients. I believe the quality of the therapeutic relationship is shaped not only by a therapist's skills, but by the authenticity, presence, and calm they bring into the room.

What's a piece of advice or a quote that has stuck with you, either personally or professionally?

"The quieter you become, the more you are able to hear." — Rumi

This is one of my favourite quotes because it reminds me that wisdom isn't something we gain from outside ourselves - it's something that emerges from stillness within. Both inside and outside of therapy, quieting down allows us to hear our own truth.
